WhatsApp coexistence, explained: keep your app, add the official API
The one‑sentence version
Coexistence lets a WhatsApp Business app number also run on the official WhatsApp Cloud API at the same time — so software (like an AI employee) can answer on your number while you keep chatting from the app on your phone.
Before coexistence, connecting a number to the API meant giving up the phone app for that number. That was the main reason small businesses never moved to the official API. Coexistence removes that trade‑off.
What stays the same
- Your number. No new SIM, no porting, no “business number” customers don’t recognise.
- Your phone app. You keep sending and receiving messages from the WhatsApp Business app.
- Your contacts and recent history. When you connect, recent chat history (Meta describes up to six months) and contacts are synced to the API side so the software has context.
- Your customers’ experience. They message the same number; they don’t see a difference unless you tell them.
What changes
- Messages now also reach the connected software in real time, so it can reply, book, capture leads — whatever you set it up to do.
- Your business is registered on Meta’s business platform (a Meta Business portfolio and a WhatsApp Business Account are created or reused during signup).
- Business‑initiated messages outside the 24‑hour customer‑service window must use approved templates, and those are billed by Meta at its published per‑message rates. Replies to customers inside the window are free. (Rates: see Meta’s pricing page; check the current version.)
Who it’s for
Any small business that already uses the WhatsApp Business app and wants automation without disruption: hotels and restaurants taking bookings, clinics and salons taking appointments, schools answering admissions, shops answering stock and price questions. If you use the consumer WhatsApp app (not Business), you can still automate with iChatUp’s Quick Connect (QR) path — or switch the number to the Business app first.
How to set it up (about 60 seconds)
- In your iChatUp dashboard, choose Official WhatsApp (Meta Embedded Signup).
- Meta’s own popup opens. Sign in with Facebook, pick or create your Business portfolio, and select the WhatsApp Business number on your phone.
- Approve coexistence when asked. Your phone shows a confirmation; history syncs in the background.
- Back in iChatUp, teach the AI your business (FAQs, price list, website or a Google Sheet) and go live.
No forms, no waiting on us, no developer.
Coexistence vs Quick Connect
iChatUp offers both. Quick Connect scans a QR from your phone (like WhatsApp Web) and works on regular or Business numbers in under a minute — convenient, no Meta setup, but it relies on your phone’s WhatsApp session. Official API with coexistence runs on Meta’s business infrastructure with delivery receipts and policy‑safe automation, and you still keep the app. Start with whichever is faster for you; you can move to the official path later without losing your business memory.
Common questions
Will my customers know? Only if you tell them — same number, same chats.
Can I still reply myself? Yes, from the phone app or from the iChatUp inbox; the AI steps back when you take over.
Can I disconnect? Yes, from the dashboard at any time; your number keeps working in the app.
